Once in a Blue Moon

This Thursday is New Year's Eve, and the celestial skies will be bathed by the light of a rare "blue moon." The term, alas, doesn't refer to a change in lunar color, but rather to the second full moon in the same calendar month. The phenomenon occurs approximately every 2 1/2 years, but it has been nearly 20 years since a blue moon fell on a New Year's Eve. Moving the party outside before the stroke of midnight to drink a toast to the moon would seem most appropriate this year.
